International Upfitting
In late 2004, Squad-Fitters was approached by an agent of the Egyptian government in regard to the feasibility of upfitting one hundred civilian motorcycles for police and escort use. Big Bill tentatively said "Sure," and by November the first thirty-three bikes had arrived... The Kawasaki plant in Nebraska was the birthplace of the motors, 2005 Kawasaki Concourses.
Over the course of the next few months, Squad-Fitters upfitted the bikes, thirty-three at a time, with the following procedure:
1.) Uncrating & assembly of the motorcycle
2.) Removal of all plastic body panels
3.) Transport panels to painter
4.) Prep bike chassis with wiring
5.) Installation of custom bracketry for PAR36's & speaker
6.) Modification of fairing pocket lid for control head mounting
7.) Modification of saddlebag for pole light mounting
8.) Retrieval of panels from painter
9.) Re-installation of body panels
10.) Mount & wire PAR36's, pole light, speaker, amps, & control head
11.) Palletize and strap bike for shipment
12.) Load Palleted bikes into sea container
Organizing the project involved ensuring the correct products in the correct quantities arrived on time from our vendors to our shop, finding and securing additional warehouse space to do the work, hiring additional full-time labor, coordinating progress at the shop with the painter, and keeping in close contact with our customer at all times.
Amazingly, the regular business at Squad-Fitters never missed a beat as this whole project took place, and we would welcome the opportunity to perform large-scale upfitting any time the need arises. We are the only company we know of who has successfully upfitted such a large number of civilian motorcycles into police motors, and the experience has only made us sharper and more ready to do it all again.
