World Wide Association of Motor Officers Gets Rolling
WWAMO, which stands for the World Wide Association of Motor Officers has been created in order for motor officers from all around the world to network and participate in special events designed specifically for the motor officer. The idea for WWAMO began when "Big Bill" Weisiger, of Squad-Fitters, and Jon Syverson from Harley-Davidson Police Sales, were in Chicago at the 9th annual Police Bicycle Officers International Convention. When the two saw that this event attracted thousands of bike cops from around the world for training and competitions, they began thinking that the same type of get-togethers needed to be formed for the police motor officer community, and WWAMO was born.
Upcoming on WWAMO's long list of projects is to take the first 100 charter members and request volunteers to be on the WWAMO Board. The board would also have representatives from major manufacturers of police motorcycles and equipment. An individual has already been approached to be the volunteer Executive Director. This individual, whoever they may be, will get the ball rolling with planning and events. Members will be notified of the board choices and other announcements through a WWAMO newsletter that is also in the works.
To all WWAMO Members,
I regret that in the past this organization has been slow in responding to you...those days are over! The reason for the delay has been a number of changes the organization has gone through in the past year. WWAMO, which was the brainchild of William "Big Bill" Weisiger, was originally handled by Squad-Fitters. With the enthusiastic response from motor officers around the world to join WWAMO it became evident to Bill that the organization needed a lot more attention in order for it to succeed.
The search for a capable leader and the turning over of responsibilities has been the major reason WWAMO has been in such a state of flux. I am happy to inform you that as of August 18, 2001, I, Antonio Ramos will be coordinating WWAMO activities. I am a retired patrol officer from the New York State park police. While serving with the park police I acted as a general topics instructor and was assigned to the mounted unit along with riding a motor. Currently, I am a Motorcycle Safety Instructor for the Motorcycle Safety foundation.
I am dedicated to making this organization a well-oiled machine, while keeping you, the member, informed. I will establish means by which each WWAMO member may contact the Board of Directors for any reason. Currently we are in the process of establishing a complete board, creating a mission statement and posting WWAMO updates on the web. I ask each member to keep in mind that we are here to serve you. We need your dedication, patience and input to succeed in making WWAMO your organization.
Sincerely,
Antonio Ramos, WWAMO Coordinator
