The Santa Monica PD is one of the few agencies in which members of the Department's command group routinely ride and actively engage in traffic safety efforts. The PD has also implemented a program whereby former motor officers are encouraged to remain active in motorcycle enforcement efforts by participating in the Supplemental Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). By participating in STEP, former motorcycle officers are able to ride on a collateral-duty basis regardless of rank or assignment.
